The virtues of reciting and memorizing
the Holy Quran

-All perfect praise be to Allah, Prayers and peace of Allah be
upon our Prophet, Muhammad, and upon all his family and
Quran is: The Word of God Almighty and His Straight Path,
which is the basis of a unification, which is the source straight to
the legislation, and manholes wisdom and guidance, a mercy
rendered to the people, and the light reflected to the nation.
-The Qur’an is the word of the Lord of the Worlds, which Allah
revealed to His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him), to bring mankind forth from darkness into
light: {It is He Who sends down manifest Ayaat (proofs,
evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) to His slave
(Muhammad) that He may bring you out from darkness into
light}.[Al-Hadeed 57:9]

-The Noble Quran is the eternal miracle of Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH) because all the miracles of the prophets, may Allah
exalt their mention, ended with their death, except our Prophet
(PBUH) whose miracle is still preserved. This everlasting
miracle is The Book of Allah and His Revealed Speech that
{Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind
it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise
(Allah)} [Fussilat 41:42]

-The Quran achieves happiness for the human, spreads security
and tranquility and provides glory, prosperity and safety. All this
is achieved through the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet
Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, this Quran
guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to
the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great
reward.} [Al-Israa 17: 9]

and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “I have left among you
two things you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to
them: The Book of Allah and my Sunnah.” [Al-Albaani:
-The Quran is the source of lighting the heart as well as life and
remedy for souls. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {O
mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord
and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy
for the believers. Say, "In the Bounty of Allah and in His
Mercy - in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they
accumulate.”}[Yunus 10: 57-58]
- When one reads the Book of Allah, he goes into a state of
peace and tranquility unlike the human speeches or writings.
Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {Those who have
believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of
Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts
are assured. Those who have believed and done righteous
deeds - a good state is theirs and a good return.}
[Ar-Ra’d 13:28-29]

- The Book of Allah to mankind's guidance is like the soul in
relation to the body. Therefore, he who abandons its recitation
and does not act in accordance to its laws is in a state of spiritual
death. Allah Almighty says (what means): {And is one who was
dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to
walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to
emerge therefrom? Thus, it has been made pleasing to the
disbelievers that which they were doing.} [Al-An’am 6:122]
- we would like to remind the reader with the following
prophetic narration, of Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (PBUH)
said: “Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses
of Allah to recite and study the Quran, tranquility will descend
upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them
and Allah will make mention of them to those (the angels) in
His proximity.” [Muslim].

-There are Ten Rewards for Every Letter Recited from the
Quran Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "The one who reads a
single letter from the Book of Allah will be rewarded with one
good deed. (Know that) A good deed is multiplied ten times
over. I do not say Alif Laam Meem is one letter. Verily, Alif is
one letter, Laam is one letter, Meem is one letter."
-The Quran will Intercede for Us on the Day of Judgement Abu
Umaamah, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the
Prophet (PBUH) said: “Read the Quran, for indeed it will come
on the Day of Standing (Judgement) as an intercessor for its
companions.” [Muslim]
-Furthermore, the angels descend to listen to the one who recites
the Noble Quran. This can be proved by what is mentioned from
the Hadeeth of Usayd ibn Hudhayr, may Allah be pleased with
him, in which he said, “While he was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah
at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was
suddenly became startled and troubled. When he stopped
reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the
horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and his son,
Yahya, was beside the horse and he was afraid that the horse
might trample on him. When he took the boy away and looked
towards the sky, he saw a cloud radiating with light that looked
like lamps." The Prophet (PBUH), said to him: “Do you know
what that was?” I (Usayd) replied, "No." The Prophet
(PBUH),said: “Those were angels who came near you because
of your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would
have remained there till morning when people would have
seen them without them (the angels) concealing themselves
from people.”[ Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
-The People of the Quran are from Best of People ‘Uthmaan,
may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (PBUH)
said: “The best of you are those who learn the Quran and
teach it to others.” [Al-Bukhari]

-It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:
“The Messenger of Allah said: 'Allah has His own people
among mankind.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who are
they?' He said: 'The people of the Qur'an, the people of Allah
and those who are closest to Him.”[Ahmad]
- Allah Almighty says, {Indeed, those who recite the Book of
Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of
what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can]
expect a profit that will never perish.
❖That He may give them in full their rewards and increase
for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and
❖And that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad],
of the Book is the truth, confirming what was before it.
Indeed, Allah, of His servants, is Acquainted and Seeing.
❖Then we caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen
of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself,
and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is
he who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah .
That [inheritance] is what is the great bounty.
❖[For them are] gardens of perpetual residence which they
will enter. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of
gold and pearls, and their garments therein will be silk.
❖And they will say, "Praise to Allah, who has removed from
us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and
Appreciative -

❖ He who has settled us in the home of duration out of His
bounty. There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there
touches us not in it weariness [of mind].} [Fâtir 35:29-30]
-The Reciters of the Quran Will Be in the Company of the Noble
and Obedient Angels. ‘Aa'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,
related that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Indeed the one who
recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, will be
in the company of the noble and obedient angels. As for the
one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling
through its verses, then he will have twice that reward.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
-The Quran Raises One's Status in this Life. In Saheeh Muslim,
which is one of the two most authentic books of prophetic
narrations, we find a wonderful story about how a man from the
people of Paradise, ‘Umar bin Al-Khattaab, may Allah be
pleased with him, understood this principle. The story is that
once, some men came to question him during his reign as caliph
regarding the leadership of Makkah. The men asked: “Who do
you use to govern Makkah?” He, may Allah be pleased with
him, said: “Ibn Abzaa.” They asked: “And who is Ibn Abzaa?”
‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, replied: “A freed slave
from those we freed.” They remarked: “You left a freed slave in
command of the People of the Valley (the noble tribes of the
Quraysh)?” He, may Allah be pleased with him, replied: “Indeed
he is a reciter of the Book of Allah and is knowledgeable about
the obligations of the Muslims. Haven’t you heard the statement
of the Prophet (PBUH): “Verily Allah raises some people by
this Book and lowers others by it”. [Muslim]

-One’s Position and Rank in Paradise is Determined by the
Amount of Quran He Memorized in this Life. ‘Abdullaah bin
‘Amr bin Al-‘Aas, may Allah be pleased with him, heard the
Prophet (PBUH) saying: “It will be said to the companion of
the Quran: 'Read and elevate (through the levels of Paradise)
and beautify your voice as you did when you were in the
worldly life! For verily, your position in Paradise will be at the
last verse you recite.” [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi]
-A person who memorizes the whole Quran and acts upon it gets
many benefits he will get what is mentioned in the saying of the
Prophet (PBUH)"Whoever reads the Quran, memorizes it, and
acts upon it, on the Day of Judgment he will be clad (by
angels) with a crown of light, its light is like the sunlight and
his parents will be clad with two garments better than the
whole world and whatever it contains." So, they would
amazingly ask: "What action did we do to deserve this?" They
will be told: "Because your son memorized the Quran".
-Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The
Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He who does not memorize
any part from the Qur'an he is like the ruined house.''
The Prophet (PBUH) has complained to Allah, Glorified and
Exalted, against those who abandon the Quran and turn away
from it. Allah Almighty says, {And the Messenger has said, "O
my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing]
abandoned.} [Al-Furqan 25:30]
Ibn Al-Qayyim said,

“There are different kinds of abandoning the Quran:
- To abandon hearing it, believing in it, and listening to it,
- To abandon working according to it (its rules, laws,
teachings…), knowing its permissible and forbidden; even if one
reads and believes in it,
- To abandon making it the judge in the basics and branches of
religion and life.
- To abandon pondering over and understanding it, and not
knowing what it verses mean,
- To abandon healing the diseases of the hearts by it, all the
previous is included in the words of Allah Almighty in the
aforementioned verse.”
There is another kind of abandoning, which has prevailed in our
times. It is putting a copy of the Quran in a certain place, to be
blessed by merely its presence. It is to be put on a shelf in the
house, at the back or front of the car, until it is covered with
dust, which is a testimony that it is abandoned. This shows the
misbehavior to the Book of Allah.
-The importance of intonation
Learning the rules of Tajweed is important and will lead to
correct pronunciation of the letters, improved recitation and
avoidance of errors
-The importance of interpretation
O Muslim, you should read the Quran with your heart first
before your tongue to find Purity of meanings which quench
your thirst from the water of eloquence, gentleness where you
smell the breeze of the garden as well as words when they are
strict, they are like waves of the overflowing seas and when they
are lenient, they are the breaths of the life to come. Allah The
Almighty Says (what means): {Then do they not reflect upon
the Quran, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?}
[Muhammad 47: 24]
- Abdullah Ibn Mas’ûd, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
“The reciter of the Quran should be known by his night (as he is
awake) while people are asleep. He is to be known by his day
(as he is fasting) while people are eating. He is to be known by
his crying (out of fear from Allah) while people are laughing, by
his piety while people are only sincere.
He is known by his silence while people are talking idly, by his
submission while people are conceited, and by his sadness while
people are rejoicing.”
Also, he said “If you seek knowledge, turn the Quran into prose,
as it includes the knowledge of those of old and those of later
- ‘Uthman ibn Affan and Hudhaifa ibn Al-Yaman, may Allah
be pleased with them, said, “When the hearts are purified, they
will not be satiated from reciting the Quran.”
-Dear brothers and sisters, that these some benefits from the
numerous benefits available can only be attained by a sincere
commitment to the Book of Allah, and not simply by an empty
claim of love for it. Rather, the heart must be sincerely attached
to the Book of Allah and the limbs and tongue will follow suit in
this attachment.

- One must know that we only mentioned a few of the numerous
benefits of reading and reflecting over the Quran. There are
many other benefits that await your reading of the Quran and
books of Hadeeth, such as the chapter of the Quran that will
plead on your behalf in the grave, and that it is a physical
healing, a source of rest and relaxation for your heart, among
many other things.
-Finally, there are other benefits that no one knows but Allah.
we ask Allah to make the Noble Quran a proof for us, not
against us. All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the
‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists). Prayers and peace of
Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family
and companions.
