Religion is an ordered collection of theories, traditional systems, and the world’s opinions that direct humanity in their everyday life. Many convictions have tales, signs and sacred pasts that aim to explain the significance and origin of life. Liberty of conscience is the code that governs the freedom of an individual or a community to manifest their beliefs in learning, practicing, and worshiping any religion. The religious liberty affects the lives of people in various ways and hence there was a need for the United States Constitution to define clearly this term in order to protect the citizens. Therefore, the country recognized that it is significant to grant individuals the right to choose a religion so that they are at peace with their creed.

There are many reasons for studying religion in colleges regardless of whether this or that student is a religious person or not. By studying different religious principles, rites and stories, one can understand and acknowledge how different communities of believers have used their religions to shape, sustain, and transform their lives. This knowledge is achieved by learning more about the way different human aspects such as politics, science, law or art have been used to explain many religious notions such as good and evil. Religion enhances global insight. The world we live in is both diverse and universal. Chances of meeting people of any religious belief and tradition are very high. Therefore, it is important to cultivate the ability to understand different religions to interact and interpret their behavior accordingly.

The academic study of religion is naturally multidisciplinary. It is a subject that gives one a chance to learn about a range of disciplinary approaches and their connections. It helps one think in a more interdisciplinary manner concerning the world and our place in it. Furthermore, the study of religion helps one to learn how to think analytically, listen attentively, speak considerately and write clearly, which is of great importance in building one’s character.

The course of religion has benefits that come along with it. Religious studies are especially meaningful because they raise important questions and values along with developing essential life skills. After a careful study, one can learn more about his or her faith and appreciate it more. The academic study of religion helps one to learn common and different points of various religions and to gain more wisdom. By tolerating, developing and respecting our beliefs, one will function as a responsible global citizen. Understanding religion helps in the development of compassionate relationships between individuals and their communities. Different parties in the community are able to identify and acknowledge the views of others in society. The course also helps a person to develop spiritual aptitude that equips them with the essential resources for full involvement in the multicultural society that calls for engaged and considerate leaders.

Research has proven that engaging in religious studies promotes the wellbeing of individuals, families, and the community at large. However, there are several pitfalls associated with not studying religion. Increased adolescent sexual behavior is one of them. Religious practices are associated with reduced teen sexual activity. Traditional values and beliefs are the most common factors cited by teens as their reason for remaining sexually abstinent. It is thus dangerous for any person to ignore the role of religion in one’s life. Abuse of alcohol and drugs is also on the rise among the non-religious people. They have no guiding force in their lives, thus they cannot differentiate between what is right and wrong. Religion should be honored as it implies a significant association between religious practice and healthy behavioral habits relating to cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs.

Unhappy marriages are also a result of poor religious backgrounds. On the contrary, stable marital relationships contribute to improved physical, mental and emotional health among the members of a family. Non-religious families lack moral guidance in making decisions and dealing with conflicts. Instances of divorce are thus rampant in such marriages, and it has an overall effect on the children. Parent-to-child relationship is significantly affected. Parents and their children with the same level of religious practice and knowledge experience better relationships with each other. For this reason, parents should aim at enhancing their children’s religious life.

Several strategies can be put in place to ensure that religion is studied without limiting the liberty of conscience of the students. Integrating and respecting all beliefs is an institution is key. It will help the learners feel free to own their beliefs without fear of discrimination. Religious freedom conditions should be analyzed for all the parties involved. The main reason is to aid in harmonization and development of programs and responses aimed at enhancing a better understanding and relationship among the various denominations. Students should condemn and take steps to prevent provocation of the religious loathing, judgment, and viciousness of others.

Increased talks and discussions on religious independence at the meetings are mandatory in order to enhance a better understanding of the features of all the religions involved. The students will thus get a clear picture of the practices and determine whether their spiritual needs are well met. The management of schools should aim at supporting programs that use multimedia and social network platforms to educate and acquaint students with other religious groups, as well as share their own views.
